FAT POTS & FLOWERS

A digital illustration and self-directed learning exercise in Octane. This work serves three main purposes. Firstly, to scratch the sculptural itch left by my installation practice. Secondly, to iterate on a personal design of mine (FAT pots), and finally to jump into GPU based rendering.

Research

The initial phase of the project was spent getting to grips with Octane's texturing pipeline. This accounted for the majority of the time spent on the project, as I allowed additional time for experimentation and implementing lessons learned from supplementary courses. I wanted to have a good foundation of knowledge moving forward as I wouldn't be able to commit this amount of R&D to future projects.

Development

The second phase of this project was spent learning how best to incorporate substance painter into my workflow. I settled on a mix of bespoke Substance painter materials for essential details on hero assets, and more procedural octane materials over the top to iterate more quickly on look and final styling.

Refinement

The final phase of the project was spent on the blocking out of compositional arrangements; the modeling, sculpting and texturing of the main assets and personal product designs.
